School Environment and History
The school is situated between Somerville Road and West Hill Road, near Bournemouth West Cliff and the town centre. There has been a school on the site since 1878. It was a Church Aided School until 1954 when it was decided to make it a Voluntary Controlled School . This means that the school is funded and abides by the policies set by the Borough Council. However the links with the Church are strong and there are active Church members on the Governing Body.
In 1958 the site of the former vicarage was acquired by Bournemouth Council for future extensions to the school. This was realised in December 1961 with the opening of a two storey classroom block with the necessary toilet and cloakroom accommodation. Later, further extensions were opened which included an Assembly Hall, forming a link between the two Key Stages.
In 1997 the school was further extended to provide the following accommodation - School Hall (Assembly and PE), music and dance studio, two classrooms per year group, two libraries, modern toilets, a medical room, a shower room, a new administrative area, three bases for teaching requirements or meetings, and a computer suite. Since the introduction of laptop technology to the school in April 2007, the computer suite has been refurbished for use by the Nurture Group. The external Playground provides a separate area for the reception children, two netball courts, a basketball court and a quiet area. The area has been recently improved with bushes, shrubs and a sensory garden. We are endeavouring to maintain a rural appearance in the centre of town.
In 2006 the Key Stage 1 classrooms were refurbished with modern toilets and wet areas.
In 2009 the two Year 5 classrooms have been fully refurbished.
Although the facilities on site are restricted, the school participates in all the town League sports and competitions.
The school has provision for 420 children, with the maximum number of children in each class being 30.
