About St Michael's Primary School

School Environment and History

The school is situated between Somerville Road and West Hill Road, near Bournemouth West Cliff and the town centre.  There has been a school on the site since 1878.  It was a Church Aided School until 1954 when it was decided to make it a Voluntary Controlled School.  This means that the school is funded and abides by the policies set by the Borough Council.  However the links with the church are strong and there are active church members on the Governing Body.

In 1958 the site of the former vicar was acquired by Bournemouth Council for future extensions to the school.  This was realised in December 1961 with the opening of a two storey classroom block with the necessary toilet and cloakroom accommodation.  In November, further extensions were opened which included an Assembly Hall, forming a link between the two Key Stages.
In 1997 the school was further extended which now provides the following accommodation - School Hall (assembly and P.E.), a music and dance studio, two classrooms per year group, two libraries, modern toilets, two quiet rooms, a medical room, a shower room and a new administrative area, three bases for teaching requirements or meetings and a computer suite.  The external playground provides a separate area for the reception children, 2 netball courts and a 'quiet area'.  A recent addition is the 'sculpture project' which has transformed a plain tree stump.(See picture below)
For games lessons such as football, rounders and hockey, pupils are transported by bus to Portchester School.  Despite our restricted space on site, St Michael's participates in all the town leagues and competitions.  During the last year, the school has won trophies in football, rounders and athletics.  We have an annual sports day which involves all the children - this is usually held at Meyrick Park.

The Quiet Area

This part of the playground is for walking. talking or sitting.  Children are not allowed to run here, and there are benches to relax on. There are hanging baskets and flowers which are tended to and watered by pupils in Year 5.
